Homework 0

Part I: Get on the class mailing list

Go to: https://sympa.eng.utah.edu/sympa/info/cs2420 and subscribe to the cs2420 mailing list.

Part II: Read and acknowledge the SoC policy on academic misconduct

Read the School of Computing Policy Statement on Academic Misconduct and submit the acknowledgment form to the Professor or TA.

Part III: Create a web page for yourself

Each week, you'll create a short web page describing the assignment you worked on that week. Each of these writeup pages should include one or more screenshots of your program running as well as an archive of your source code You'll create the first such page next week. This week you should also create an "index" web page, that needs to contain no more than your name, a picture, and a list of links to the individual writeup pages for each week's assignments. You can post these web pages wherever you wish. Anyone enrolled in the class can create a web page on the CADE system. If you're a CS student, you may also create your webpage on the CS web servers. Finally, if you've got your own web space somewhere else, feel free to post your creations there. However, please make sure the webserver where you post your writeups will be accessible to those of us grading the assignments (and that it has enough bandwidth to handle transferring screenshots, etc.)! One of the benefits of creating a set of web pages like this is that it can become a "portfolio" of work to show off at interviews. If you plan to do this, it will be worth taking some time (either now or later) to make your pages look "polished."

Part IV: Handing in some important info using the online handin system

Finally, we need you to submit some important information for grading. Create a plain-text file called "info.txt" containing the following information: your name, your major, your CADE username (i.e., the name you type to log in to the Windows machines), the URL for the index web page you created in Part I (above), a nickname for me to use for the public grade spreadsheet, and your preferred email address. Here's an example (make sure to replace the info with your own). Once you've got the information in the file, submit it using the CADE online handin system or the command-line handin program. Your username and password should be the same username and password you use to log in to the CADE computers. If you have trouble logging in, please talk to one of the operators in the CADE lab. When the system asks for your class, enter "cs2420" (without the quotes). When it asks for the assignment, choose "Hw00". Use the final page to upload and submit the info.txt file you just created. That's all for this week!

Grading

Each homework assignment will receive a grade out of 100 points. This week, the available points will be broken down like so:
  • 100 points: Creating an index web page for assignment writeups
